Job 996809 Photo Imaging Technician, College of Arts & Sciences: This is a part time position (30 hours per week, 9 months per year) but the technician is on call 7 days per week for equipment problems as they arise and is expected to trouble-shoot problems over the phone whenever possible. The photo lab manager oversees all lab operations/ maintenance, works closely with students, and ensures a safe, orderly, and productive work environment. Responsibilities include: Managing photo lab facility and student assistants; mixing chemistry (black & white and alternative processes); maintenance and daily operation of all darkroom equipment including cleaning and repair of enlargers, mounting presses, camera and lighting equipment, color laser and inkjet printers; maintenance of chemistry and equipment inventories; purchasing and budget oversight; scheduling, training and supervision of student assistants; helping photo students of all levels in their acquisition of knowledge in regard to photographic techniques and processes. Technician must be able to: trouble-shoot problems students encounter in lab with camera and lighting equipment, darkroom equipment, chemical processes and computer based imaging; Work individually with undergraduate students to help in their acquisition of knowledge of traditional black and white film processing and printing, as well as digital printing, analog and digital camera functions, studio lighting, and health and safety issues specific to photo labs; have knowledge of various indicators of processing problems, have patience and experience working with students, be able to help students with a variety of questions relating to all aspects of photography (including various camera formats, black and white, digital processes, Photoshop, studio lighting, and alternative processes); work with Macintosh computers, scanners, and printers; calibrate monitors. Work with and support faculty in planning and implementation of new equipment, facilities, initiatives for photography and imaging during transition of labs toward greater use of digital technology. Technician must be able to work individually with students to make digital prints and help students understand the nuances of digital photo output. Knowledge of chemical disposal/ toxic waste handling and government EPA standards are necessary to ensure the lab runs within government and OSHA guidelines. Technician must work closely with student assistants to teach them lab operations including the mixing and disposal of black and white chemicals, safety issues surrounding chemical use and ventilation, and to train them to supervise the lab when the photo imaging specialist is not on duty. Requirements for the position include experience in custom lab and/or large university darkroom. Applicants must be mechanically inclined (able to perform regular maintenance and repairs on printers and enlargers) and self-directed (able to work without supervision). Experience with digital SLR cameras, Macintosh computers (inc. Macintosh Operating System and Photoshop), inkjet printers, and scanners is also required. In-depth knowledge of fine art black and white processes, resourcefulness, strong organizational skills, and good interpersonal/ management skills are also required. Preferred qualifications include a BA/BFA in studio art, Background and ongoing interest in fine art photography and digital imaging, knowledge of EPA standards and OSHA guidelines, experience working with college students, and up to date knowledge of digital imaging equipment/ software.
